Climate change is reshaping ecosystems across Europe, enabling disease-carrying insects to survive and spread into new regions. Sand flies transmit zoonotic pathogens that threaten both human and animal health. However, it remains difficult to predict how the climate drives their expansion. The EU-funded CLIMOS project aims to tackle this emerging challenge by quantifying how climate and environmental factors influence sand fly populations and sand fly-borne diseases across Europe. CLIMOS will deliver an early warning system and decision-support tools to forecast infection risk, geographic spread and adaptation options. An open-access interactive platform will integrate surveillance data, climate information and modelling tools to support decisions by public authorities, researchers and policymakers.
Field of action:
Animal (Invertebrates [Arthropods: Insects]), Microbes/Parasites (Viral, Unicellular eukaryotes), Environments (Temperate grassland, Temperate forest, Desert, Other [urban/suburban areas), Environmental changes (Climate change), Disease metrics (Seroprevalence [animal], Seroprevalence [human])
